UG Decides 2026

Zombo vocal NRM mobilizer wins primary, vows to tackle corruption in party leadership

“We will not tolerate incitement or any form of violence in the remaining electoral process,” he cautioned.

Zombo: Stephen Okwaimungu, a staunch supporter of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and active member of the Patriotic League of Uganda, has emerged victorious in the NRM primary elections for Publicity Secretary of Paidha Town Council, Zombo District.

The NRM party primaries for sub-counties and town councils were held across the country on Friday, May 16, 2025. In Paidha, Okwaimungu, widely known by his alias “Ambassador Okwai,” secured a landslide victory with 123 votes, defeating his opponents Emmanuel Ovoya and Kizito Oyullu.

Following the announcement of his win, a jubilant Okwaimungu described the result as a “milestone in his political journey”, revealing his ambition to challenge Boris Ringtho for the position of NRM District Secretary General.

“I’m overwhelmed by this victory. Despite attempts to buy votes overnight, my supporters stood firm. I thank them for their trust,” said Okwaimungu.

“To corrupt leaders tarnishing our party at the district level, I’m coming to clean up the mess and replace Boris as Secretary General.”

In a surprising turn of events, Mave Wedunga Isaiah, also known as “Abiriga” and the long-serving NRM Chairperson for Paidha Town Council for over 20 years, lost his seat to Shaban Ouchi.

Mave accepted defeat with grace and called for unity: “I urge our members to cease personal attacks and insults against my family. Let’s act with maturity. I will work with the new chairperson to promote our party.”

Other results and reactions

Other positions filled in the primaries included representatives for youth, women, veterans, and special interest groups.

Prisca Onegiu, the NRM Registrar for Zombo District, commended party members for a peaceful and orderly election process. Speaking at Bar Okoro Stadium in Paidha, she praised the calmness that characterized the exercise.

Catharine Akumu Mavenjina, Northern Uganda Female MP, also lauded the NRM supporters for their discipline and political maturity.

Meanwhile, Bruno Manano, Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Zombo, warned against any attempts to stir conflict during the next phase of the elections.

“We will not tolerate incitement or any form of violence in the remaining electoral process,” he cautioned.

The district-level NRM primaries are scheduled to take place next Friday, as the party ramps up preparations for the crucial 2026 general elections.
