Thugs steal lightning arresters from Hoima schools, health centers

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the thefts to report to the nearest police station.

Hoima: A wave of theft targeting lightning arresters has hit schools and health centers in Kyabigambire sub-county, Hoima district, with over six institutions reportedly affected.

Among the affected institutions are Bineneze Primary School, Katugo Primary School, Kisabagwa Primary School, Kibugubya Primary School, Kakindo Primary School, and Kyabigambire Primary School. These schools have been left vulnerable to lightning strikes after unknown thugs made away with their only line of defense during thunderstorms.

Tom Tomanya, the Head Teacher of Bulindi Church of Uganda Primary School, revealed that their school’s last remaining lightning arrester was recently stolen just a year after the first one was taken. The school, which has an enrollment of over 500 learners, is now in a state of panic.

“We are deeply concerned about the safety of our pupils. Without a lightning arrester, their lives are at serious risk, especially during the rainy season,” Mr. Tomanya said.
“We call on the sub-county and district leaders to intervene urgently and investigate those behind these thefts.”

Kyabigambire LC3 Chairperson, Mr. Alex Mwesigwa, condemned the thefts as an unfortunate act of sabotage that puts children’s lives in danger.

“It’s disheartening that some individuals are targeting such vital safety equipment. We urge community members to remain vigilant and help safeguard public property,” Mwesigwa said.

He confirmed that the sub-county has already engaged the police and investigations are ongoing.

Lightning arresters, also known as lightning conductors, play a critical role in protecting structures and occupants from lightning strikes, which are common in the region. Each unit costs between UGX 800,000 and UGX 1.2 million, making them a costly yet essential investment.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the thefts to report to the nearest police station.
