Suspected smugglers attack URA officials, one civilian killed

The assailants allegedly assaulted the officials and set the vehicle on fire, completely destroying it.

Manafwa: Police in Manafwa District are investigating a violent confrontation that resulted in the death of one civilian, injuries to four people, and the destruction of a government vehicle during a smuggling-related incident on May 8, 2025.

The chaos unfolded at around 10:00 AM in Buwasibi Cell, Bunabwana Ward, Bunyinya Town Council, when officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) intercepted a suspected smuggler.

According to Elgon region police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, as URA officials disembarked from their vehicle a white Toyota Vitz, registration number UA 902AQ they were ambushed by a group of individuals believed to be accomplices of the suspect. The assailants allegedly assaulted the officials and set the vehicle on fire, completely destroying it.

The situation escalated quickly, prompting a call for reinforcements. Army personnel responded to the scene to restore order.

During efforts to disperse the violent crowd, security officers fired shots into the air. Tragically, a stray bullet allegedly struck Mukoni Brian, 30, a male civilian, who was later pronounced dead.

Two URA officers and two civilians sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The deceased’s body has been transferred to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police say investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators of the violence and determine the exact sequence of events.

Authorities have condemned the attack and emphasized the need for calm and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
