However, the police picked up the dead body and took it back to the mortuary.
Arua: The family of the juvenile Afeku Felix, who was allegedly tortured to death by prison wardens, wants justice for the dead to prevail.
This was during the meeting on Thursday, which was chaired by community liaison officer central division Matua Alfred together with the central division mayor Muzaidi Khemis in prison cell Kenya ward in Arua central division.
The meeting followed an earlier incident whereby a section of aggrieved relatives of the late Afeku Felix dumped his dead body at Uganda Prison Service regional headquarters in Arua city.
This came after Ugandan prisons failed to meet the demands of transportation of his dead body to Rhino camp and meet the burial expenses.
Afeku and Andruga were allegedly tortured by the prison wardens on Tuesday morning when they had gone to fetch drinking water from a nearby well after Afeku had developed a heartburn.
However, the police picked up the dead body and took it back to the mortuary.
The action caused panic and mixed reactions among the city leaders, and an emergency meeting was held in the office of the resident city commissioner.
The meeting involved representatives of the family, police, prison boss, and elected leaders.
After the meeting, police headed by Matua Alfred, the community liaison officer, went to the mortuary and picked up the dead body and delivered it to the relatives in the prison cell, where the meeting together with the community was held.
According to Vuni Benson Yandu, one of the family members who attended the meeting, told the media that the prison bosses have agreed to support the funeral expenses and transport the body to Abiri village in Rigbo subcounty in Madi Okollo with a tune of 6 million and one million to support the treatment of the victim, Andruga, who is still hospitalized.
A family member identified as Azama Samuel called for justice to prevail, which will help to bring justice even for others who could have demised in a similar way.
The mayor of Arua central division has told police to make use of the CCTV cameras so that it can help them in investigations.
He says for the community to have trust in the leaders and security forces, they should work hand in hand with the CCTV cameras to expedite the investigations.
Matua Alfred, the community liaison officer for Arua Central Division, assured the public that the matter is going to be investigated until justice prevails.
He asked the family members and the community to remain calm as they continue to work on the investigations.
Afeku Felix was born on the 9th of August 2007, and by the time of his death, he was 17 years old.
He will be laid to rest on Friday in Abiri village, Kwili parish, Rigbo Sub County, Madi Okollo district.
