Authorities have reassured the public that the situation is under control and that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Zombo: A major operation by law enforcement in Zombo District has led to the seizure of a suspected toxic chemical believed to be sodium cyanide (NaCN), following intelligence suggesting it was destined for illicit transport into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The operation was conducted at 10:42 AM on April 4, 2025, at Bunya Stage, Jupanyondo West Cell, Nyibola Ward in Paidha Town Council, under reference SD 24/04/06/2025.
According to police, the raid was carried out by a coordinated team of detectives and uniformed officers, accompanied by the LC1 Chairman and the premises owner.
A thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of 15 small drums, each weighing 50 kilograms, containing a white substance suspected to be sodium cyanide, a highly toxic, water-soluble compound commonly used in gold extraction and classified as a controlled substance due to its lethal potential.
The recovered materials were immediately secured and transported to the Paidha Police exhibit store for further forensic analysis and safe storage.
Speaking to the press, West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea confirmed the seizure and stated that an active investigation is ongoing to trace the origin, ownership, and intended purpose of the chemical.
“We are treating this as a serious public safety and environmental threat. Investigations are focused on identifying all individuals involved and the intended destination of the chemical,” said SP Asea.
Under Ugandan law, the unauthorized possession, transport, or export of hazardous chemicals like sodium cyanide is strictly prohibited. Agencies such as the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) are mandated to enforce these controls.
Violators face severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment, due to the high risk these substances pose to both public health and national security.
Authorities have reassured the public that the situation is under control and that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
