Kiryandongo: Panyadoli Health Center IV has officially launched an electronic medical record (EMR) system, marking a major milestone in the digitization of healthcare services in Kiryandongo District.
The system, supported by Action Against Hunger and the Ministry of Health, aims to improve patient care, streamline record keeping, and strengthen health data management.
Speaking at the launch, Madam Namuli Sarah from Action Against Hunger emphasized the importance of transitioning from manual to digital systems. “We believe this digital transformation will strengthen the health system. The electronic medical record system is a critical advancement for service delivery,” she noted.
Mr. Job Ocheng, Program Director at Action Against Hunger, expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for its support. “Digitization is key to building capacity between the health sector and its service users. Compared to other countries, Uganda is making commendable progress,” he added.
Representing the Ministry of Health, Mr. Jamiru Mpiima highlighted that the digital transition aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan, which promotes integrated digital systems across all sectors.
He stated, “The EMR system will simplify data management, reduce medical errors, and improve the quality of care. It will also allow tracking of patient data and monitoring of disease outbreaks.”
However, Mr. Mpiima also pointed out challenges, particularly unstable power supply, which may affect system performance. In response, Hon. Linos Ngompek, Member of Parliament for Kibanda North, assured the public that the government is addressing electricity issues. “Power infrastructure is being expanded as part of Uganda’s development efforts,” he said.
Mr. Ansthlem Kyaligonza, Chief Administrative Officer of Kiryandongo District, raised concerns about staffing shortages at the health center. “Only 30 staff are on the government payroll, with 42 supported by NGOs, yet the facility requires 130 workers. We urge Parliament to address this wage issue to increase staffing,” he appealed.
LC5 Chairperson Edith Aliguma Adyeeri urged the Ministry of Health to fast-track the upgrade of additional health centers in the district. “Facilities such as Apodrwa, Yabwenge, and Diika are still waiting for the promised upgrades. It’s time to act,” she said.
Madam Namuli Sarah further appealed to the local government to take full ownership of the EMR project and ensure its long-term sustainability at Panyadoli Health Center IV.
