NRM dominates Masindi LC2 elections, wins 54 of 57 seats

Masindi: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has dominated the LC2 elections in Masindi District, winning 54 of the 57 parish chairperson positions contested on Monday.
Only three independent candidates emerged victorious across the district’s 57 parishes.
The results were confirmed on Tuesday morning by the Masindi District Electoral Commission at its head offices in Northern Cell, Central Division, Masindi Municipality.
Abubakr Lubwama, the Electoral Commission Assistant Returning Officer for Masindi District, said the elections were peaceful and characterized by a good voter turnout.
“The elections were peaceful, and we had a good voter turnout. We also appreciate all stakeholders who supported the Electoral Commission in successfully conducting the exercise,” Lubwama said.
He explained that elections were held in some parishes, while candidates in other areas were unopposed and subsequently convened council meetings to constitute their executive committees.
According to Lubwama, in areas where elections were conducted, the elected LC2 chairpersons nominated six executive committee members, alongside four representatives from special interest groups.
He said all the 57 parishes in Masindi District now have elected LC2 leadership.
“Because these elections were conducted under a political party system, 54 of the elected chairpersons stood on the NRM ticket, while three were independents,” Lubwama said.
Lubwama congratulated the newly elected leaders and urged them to prioritize service delivery in their respective areas.
He said the next step is for the elected leaders to take their oaths of office, a process that will be handled by the local government authorities.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has started preparations for the Women Council elections.
Lubwama said the Commission is currently displaying electoral college registers at the sub-county level ahead of nominations and elections.
Nominations for Women Council representatives at sub-county level are scheduled for August 14, followed by elections on August 18, 2026.
At the district level, nominations will be held on August 24, while elections are scheduled for August 28, 2026.
