MTN contributes to Lugazi Catholic Diocese Ahead of Martyrs Day 2025

He concluded by noting that the pilgrimage budget varies depending on the diocese and specific preparations involved.

Lugazi: As Uganda prepares to commemorate Martyrs Day on June 3, 2025, Lugazi Catholic Diocese this year’s lead organizer has received a significant donation from MTN Uganda.

The telecom giant has contributed UGX 15 million, 500 reflector jackets, and water to support pilgrims who will journey on foot to Namugongo for the celebrations.

The donation was officially handed over Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the diocesan offices in Lugazi Municipality.

Ronald Richard Dhamulira, MTN’s Regional Business Manager, expressed his delight at supporting the Lugazi Diocese during this important event. “We are happy to contribute towards Martyrs Day 2025. MTN will continue supporting other regions and churches as part of our commitment to this national celebration,” he said.

He also highlighted that MTN has provided a MoMoPay code to facilitate both payments and donations to the Lugazi Diocese. He encouraged the church to use the digital payment platform to collect offerings and receive support from the community, noting that it would also help in tracking the pilgrims effectively.

Reverend Father Kayondo Richard, Vicar of Mary Queen of Peace Cathedral in Lugazi, speaking on behalf of Bishop Christopher Kakooza, expressed gratitude to MTN for their timely support. “This year’s theme is drawn from Mark 10:51 ‘Master, I want to see again.’ We are pilgrims of hope,” he said.

Fr. Kayondo emphasized the importance of the donation, citing the high cost of organizing the event, and noted that committees have already been set up to manage preparations. “We expect over 25,000 pilgrims on foot, and such support is critical. We still welcome more assistance,” he added.

He further announced that pilgrims from Lugazi Diocese will set off on June 1 at 5:00 a.m. and are expected to reach Namugongo by 4:00 p.m. the same day.

Key convergence points for pilgrims include Mbiko, Nyenga, and Naminya, with an overnight stay planned at Lugazi Diocese.

The next stop will be Nagalama, with additional pilgrims joining from Nkokojeru and surrounding islands. The final gathering will be at Nsonde Parish.

He concluded by noting that the pilgrimage budget varies depending on the diocese and specific preparations involved.
