Masindi Municipality tops Bunyoro in 2024 PLE rankings

Additionally, girls outperformed boys, achieving a 98% pass rate compared to 96.1% for boys.

Masindi: Masindi Municipal Council has emerged as the top-performing administrative unit in the Bunyoro Sub-region in the recently released 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results.

According to the rankings, Masindi Municipality secured the 38th position nationally, leading the region with an impressive 98% pass rate, followed by Kibaale District at 94%.

Speaking at the release of the results on Wednesday at the Masindi Municipal Chambers, Betty Bahemuka, the Municipal Inspector of Schools, revealed that the number of registered candidates increased from 2,106 in 2023 to 2,214 in 2024, marking a 5% rise. Notably, more girls than boys completed the primary education cycle.

However, seven candidates missed the exams due to school dropout. Bahemuka noted mixed trends in performance: a 3% decrease in division one passes, a 2% increase in division two passes and a 1% increase in division three passes.

Additionally, girls outperformed boys, achieving a 98% pass rate compared to 96.1% for boys.

Bahemuka raised concerns about the declining quality of division one grades. She emphasized that the highest score attained by top-performing students was six aggregates, indicating room for improvement.

“The number of primary schools producing first grades decreased from 42 out of 62 (68%) in 2023 to 38 out of 63 (60%) in 2024. Additionally, 25 out of 63 schools (40%) did not register any Division One candidates,” she stated.

She further urged schools to focus more on improving the performance of boys to enhance overall education quality.

The best-performing subject in the 2024 PLE was English, followed by: Social Studies, Science and Mathematics

Bahemuka also commended the district for maintaining examination integrity, as no cases of malpractice were reported in Masindi Municipality.

Ronald Businge Kyomuhendo, the Masindi Municipal Mayor, acknowledged the district’s achievement as the best in Bunyoro but emphasized the need for further improvement to rank among the top administrative units nationwide.

He appealed to parents to provide children with basic educational necessities and discouraged involving children in non-school activities during school hours, which negatively impacts their academic performance.

Masindi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Darius Nandinda stressed the importance of a harmonious relationship between parents, school administrations, and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), warning that poor cooperation negatively affects student performance.

Julius Atuhairwe, the headteacher of Masindi International School, attributed their strong performance to committed teachers and effective teaching methods.

Similarly, Jesica Abaret, headteacher of Masindi Model Primary School, assured parents of even better performance in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has officially released results for 17 examination centres in Kibaale district that were previously withheld when the PLE results were first announced on January 23, 2025.

According to John Taragaboine, the Assistant Senior Education Officer in charge of PLE activities in Kibaale, the affected schools have now received their results.

Taragaboine explained that when he visited UNEB to inquire about the withheld results, no clear explanation was given. However, the release has brought relief and joy to affected head teachers, who had been anxiously awaiting clarification.

Masindi Municipality’s 2024 PLE success marks a significant milestone in regional education, but stakeholders recognize the need for continued improvement, especially in boys’ education and Division One quality.
