Masindi Municipal Council prematurely adjourned after turning rowdy

The speaker accused the suspended councilors of not abiding by the law and could not proceed with the meeting in their presence.

Masindi: The Masindi Municipal Council speaker, Tadeo Opio, adjourned the council meeting for the third time after it turned chaotic.

It all started when Opio asked three councillors, Robert Akugizibwe, representing Kijura; Richard Alinaitwe, from the civic ward; and Abdul Azizi Katuku Siringi, from the southern ward, to leave the council meeting.

The meeting was held in the municipal council chambers on Tuesday.

Opio said that the trio were suspended, but they refused to pick up their suspension letters and used their presence to give them personally.

After giving them the suspension letters, Opio asked the trio to leave the August house, but they refused, arguing they were elected to represent electorates in their constituencies.

This compelled the speaker to adjourn the meeting for ten minutes twice and also called for the intervention of the Masindi district police commander,  Jacob Chepsikor, to arrest the councilors after several engagements to negotiate with them but in vain.

When Chepsikor attempted to speak to councilors from council chambers, councilors told him that the rules of procedure do not allow him to do so, adding that no one can also be arrested by police from council chambers.

This prompted Speaker Opio to adjourn the council meeting to Tuesday next week since the suspended councilors declined to vacate the council chambers.

The speaker accused the suspended councilors of not abiding by the law and could not proceed with the meeting in their presence.

Speaking to this publication after adjourning the meeting, the councillor Akugizibwe vowed to attend the meeting on Tuesday too.

The three councilors were first suspended by the speaker on November 31, 2023, over an attempt to assault the speaker for ruling in favor of James Venture Ltd., a private garbage collector.
