Lightning kills 21-year-old in Masindi

This is not the first lightning-related tragedy reported in the district.

Masindi: Residents of Nsambya Village in Bikonzi Sub-county, Masindi District, have been left in shock following the sudden death of 21-year-old William Dramadi, who was struck by lightning on Thursday morning.

The tragic incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. during light drizzles, as Dramadi sought shelter with friends in a grass-thatched house.

According to Janet Acan, the deceased’s cousin, Dramadi had merely gone to visit friends and pass time when disaster struck.

“He was struck by lightning while sitting with his colleagues in a grass-thatched house. He had just gone to be with them since they are his friends,” Acan said.

She confirmed that Dramadi died instantly, while his companions sustained minor injuries.

The body was later transported to Masindi Hospital mortuary for a postmortem, according to Bosco Alinaitwe, an eyewitness.

This is not the first lightning-related tragedy reported in the district. In March this year, residents of Kyakasozi Cell in Bigando Ward, Kigulya Division, were similarly alarmed when lightning struck two grass-thatched houses during a heavy downpour around 12:00 p.m., sparking a fire.

The frequency of such incidents has raised concerns among locals, particularly regarding the vulnerability of grass-thatched structures during storms.
