Kitgum receives 310 iron sheets from OPM

The donation followed a disaster caused by strong winds that affected two learning institutions: five classroom blocks at Kitgum Technical Institute and three at Ocettoke Primary School.

Kitgum: Kitgum District received 310 iron sheets from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Uganda, on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

The donation followed a disaster caused by strong winds that affected two learning institutions: five classroom blocks at Kitgum Technical Institute and three at Ocettoke Primary School.

Mr. Lawot Anthony Lam, the Kitgum District District Education Officer, expressed his gratitude for the iron sheets, highlighting their importance in supporting the affected learning institutions and benefiting the community.

The Kitgum District Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, Ms. Adokorach Pamela, who represented the CAO, appreciated the OPM’s support.

She recounted the unfortunate incident at Ocettoke Primary School on October 23, 2023, where a classroom block was blown off due to a heavy downpour, adding that the district team inspected the site, leading the District Disaster Committee to recommend that the CAO request support from the OPM for iron sheets.

The Kitgum District LCV Vice Chairperson, Hon. Lapyem Emmanuel, acknowledged Uganda’s swift disaster response, which is expected to resolve the destabilization caused.

He further appreciated the Kitgum District Woman MP, Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian, the State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees, for her actions and follow-up on the disaster matter with the OPM.

Commissioner Ssegawa Jimmy Ebil, the Kitgum RDC, emphasized that this donation demonstrates the central government’s commitment to responding to the needs of schools and the community, highlighting the unwavering representation by the district leadership.

He warned against any mismanagement of the iron sheets, noting that 93 sheets are allocated to Ocettoke Primary School and 217 to Kitgum Technical Institute.

On October 31, 2023, the Kitgum District Woman MP, now the State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees, Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian, raised a matter of national importance before the Parliament of Uganda regarding the status of Ocettoke Primary School.

This appeal was later supported by a formal letter from the Kitgum District LCV Chairperson, Hon. Arwai Christopher Obol, which also addressed the needs of Kitgum Technical Institute, both of which had suffered from the disaster.
