Kabalega Old Boys launch bursary scheme, unveil Shs120m gate and monument

“A student’s future should not be determined by the financial circumstances of their family,” Magemeso said.

Masindi: The Kabalega Secondary School Old Boys Association (KASSOBA) has launched a bursary scheme to support academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students, alongside unveiling infrastructure projects worth Shs120 million at the school in Masindi District.

The initiatives were announced on Sunday, October 11, 2026, during the association’s annual general meeting at Kabalega Secondary School.

KASSOBA Chairperson Ibrahim Magemeso said the bursary programme was designed to ensure that bright students do not abandon their education because of financial difficulties.

“A student’s future should not be determined by the financial circumstances of their family,” Magemeso said.

He explained that the scheme would initially benefit deserving students at both Ordinary Level (O-Level) and Advanced Level (A-Level), with plans to expand the programme as more resources become available.

“Beyond fees, the programme will offer mentorship, career guidance, and personal encouragement to help beneficiaries develop confidence, discipline, leadership, and a commitment to serving others,” he said.

Magemeso appealed to old students, association chapters and well-wishers to contribute financially, sponsor learners and offer mentorship to beneficiaries.

In addition to the bursary scheme, the association officially handed over a modern school gate valued at Shs100 million and a monument honouring King Kabalega worth Shs20 million.

The projects were handed over by Buruli County Member of Parliament Aled Ronald Akugizibwe, who is also an alumnus of the school.

Magemeso said the new gate would give the institution an entrance befitting its history, while the monument would preserve the legacy of King Kabalega and his contribution to the development of the Bunyoro Kingdom.

The projects add to KASSOBA’s previous contributions to the school, including library renovations, a Shs80 million water project, dormitory improvements and interventions to strengthen the institution’s water supply.

Despite the contributions from former students, Headteacher Jackson Katusiime said the school continued to face significant financial and staffing challenges that were affecting its operations.

Katusiime said the new gate would improve security and help strengthen discipline among learners but noted that the school needed additional support to address its outstanding obligations.

He revealed that the school had Shs48 million in unpaid staff allowances covering June to September.

The institution is also grappling with a debt burden exceeding Shs300 million, attributed to delayed or unpaid school fees by parents.

Katusiime further disclosed that the school had only 34 staff members on the government payroll against an estimated requirement of 90, leaving a substantial staffing gap.

The headteacher called for continued support from alumni and other stakeholders to help the school address its financial and human resource challenges.

Speaking as the chief guest, Akugizibwe commended KASSOBA members for investing in their former school and urged them to sustain their contributions.

He encouraged the association to develop more initiatives that would benefit both the institution and the wider community.

Bishop Joshua Kugonza of Masindi Kitara Diocese also called on the community to build on the school’s reputation for producing prominent personalities by supporting local education institutions.

He emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining the school’s achievements and ensuring that future generations benefit from quality education.

KASSOBA currently has 620 members and aims to increase its active membership to at least 1,000 old boys by 2028.

Founded in 1959 by the British colonial administration, Kabalega Secondary School is a boys’ boarding school located in Masindi District. Over the decades, it has become one of the longstanding educational institutions in the Bunyoro sub-region.

The newly launched bursary scheme and infrastructure projects are expected to strengthen the relationship between the school and its alumni while providing additional support to learners facing financial difficulties.
