Housemaid dumps newborn baby in pit latrine
One such case occurred in Kasangati, Wakiso District, where a 25-year-old mother also abandoned her newborn in a pit latrine.
Nansana: In a distressing incident, police in Nansana successfully rescued a newborn baby boy who had been dumped by his 18-year-old mother, Ainembabazi Moreen, a housemaid, in a pit latrine.
The rescue took place on Tuesday in Nansana East II Zone, Nansana Municipality, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
According to SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the alarm was raised by 39-year-old Niwagaba Praise, Moreen’s employer and a breastfeeding mother.
Niwagaba became concerned when Moreen had not returned to the house at the expected time. Upon investigating, she discovered Moreen covered in blood and standing in the pit latrine room. She then heard the baby crying from within the latrine.
Police were alerted, and a team of fire brigade personnel dug into the pit latrine to rescue the baby. The newborn was found alive, cleaned with warm water, and rushed to Mulago Referral Hospital for medical attention. Moreen, who was also bleeding, was taken to the hospital for care.
A case of attempted infanticide has been filed at Nansana Police Station, and investigations are ongoing. Police plan to thoroughly interview Moreen to understand her motives and also intend to speak with the baby’s father.
This disturbing case is part of a worrying trend, as there have been similar incidents of abandoned babies in the Kampala area. One such case occurred in Kasangati, Wakiso District, where a 25-year-old mother also abandoned her newborn in a pit latrine.
