Elderly woman dies after falling into local alcohol fermentation pit in Kagadi
According to the postmortem report, Bafabakuze was not murdered.
Kagadi: A 70-year-old woman has died after allegedly falling into a pit used for fermenting local alcohol in Kinyarwanda Village, Ruteete Sub-county, Kagadi District.
The deceased has been identified as Joy Bafabakuze, a resident of Kagorora Cell in Kyenzige Town Council.
According to local leaders, Bafabakuze had travelled to visit her relatives in Kinyarwanda Village before the tragic incident. She reportedly fell into a pit containing locally fermented alcohol, commonly known as omunumi, while attempting to collect some for drinking.
The LC3 Chairperson of Ruteete Town Council, Karadi Ndagize, said the fermentation pit belongs to the LC1 Chairperson of Kinyarwanda Village and that investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are still investigating the circumstances under which the deceased fell into the fermentation pit. We appeal to members of the public to value their lives and avoid risky behaviour that can lead to such fatal accidents,” Ndagize said.
Police officers visited the scene, documented the incident, and transported the body for a postmortem examination before handing it over to the family for burial.
According to the postmortem report, Bafabakuze was not murdered.
“The postmortem established that she was not killed. She died after becoming trapped in the fermented local alcohol while allegedly trying to collect it for drinking,” Ndagize said.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution around fermentation pits and other hazardous areas to prevent similar tragedies.
