EAIMS seeks NCHE accreditation to award bachelor’s degrees

Founded in 2009, EAIMS has grown to be a critical player in the education landscape of northern Uganda, which was severely impacted by conflict.

Gulu: The East Africa Institute of Management Science (EAIMS) in Gulu has officially announced its aspirations to gain accreditation that would allow it to confer bachelor’s degrees in fields like business studies and social sciences.

This significant move is contingent on the approval of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), to which EAIMS has submitted an extensive set of documentation for consideration.

Ronald Oyoo, the academic registrar of EAIMS, confirmed that the institute had provided a comprehensive package including a catalog of accredited courses, a detailed educational management plan, a solid human resources framework, and a strategic infrastructural development plan.

The submission marks a pivotal moment as the institution awaits NCHE’s assessment and potential approval for degree offerings.

Background

Founded in 2009, EAIMS has grown to be a critical player in the education landscape of northern Uganda, which was severely impacted by conflict.

The institution initially faced challenges such as low enrollment, but over time, it has transformed into the only accredited provider of certificate and diploma programs in the Acholi sub-region.

EAIMS has played a vital role in providing post-conflict education and training to local youth, helping many transition from basic education to higher-level qualifications.

During its 11th graduation ceremony on April 4, 2025, EAIMS celebrated 138 graduates, including 36 National Certificate recipients and 102 diploma graduates.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. George Ebine, the head of NCHE’s library and documentation, marking a notable achievement for the institution.

Supporting regional integration

EAIMS’ commitment to fostering regional integration is reflected in its significant enrollment of South Sudanese refugees, who make up about 20% of the student body.

This demographic highlights the institution’s role in promoting East African community integration, allowing students from South Sudan to access education in Uganda and return to contribute to their country’s reconstruction and development.

The success of South Sudanese students, particularly in disciplines like procurement, logistics, business administration, and public administration, underscores EAIMS’ impact in building human capital for the wider East African region.

Celebrating excellence

During the graduation ceremony, the EAIMS students’ guild recognized the top-performing male and female graduates with certificates of appreciation. Richard Onencan Apili, the guild president, noted that this initiative aimed to motivate other students to achieve academic excellence.

EAIMS is also set to host a cultural gala on April 28, 2025, under the theme “Strengthening Cultural Diversity in a Changing Society.”

The event will feature performances celebrating the rich cultural heritage of students, including traditional dances, folk songs, and a rendition of the institution’s anthem.

The cultural showcase will bring together students from diverse backgrounds, such as the Acholi, South Sudanese, Langi, and Buganda communities, fostering unity and inclusivity.
