Burundo breaks silence on academic credentials amid online attacks

“Using my clan name connects me to my people. It’s part of who I am,” he added.

Bulambuli: Bulambuli County MP aspirant Hon. Burundo Musingo Mungoma Alex has spoken out in response to mounting social media reports questioning the authenticity of his academic credentials, dismissing the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

In an exclusive interview, Hon. Burundo described the allegations as a “tired tactic” often deployed by long-time political rivals who feel threatened by his growing support base.

He reaffirmed that he possesses all the required academic qualifications and has submitted them multiple times to the Electoral Commission.

Born in Bulambuli District, Burundo’s early life was disrupted by insecurity due to Karimojong armed raids. For his safety, he was sent to live with his maternal aunt in Namawanga village, now part of Lukhonge Sub-county in Mbale District. Several locals and childhood acquaintances have since come forward to confirm his educational journey.

“I attended Namawanga Primary School, then proceeded to Musese Secondary School for Senior 1 and 2, Mbale Secondary School for Senior 3 and 4, and later completed A-Level at Agrey Memorial School in Kampala,” he shared.

He sat for his Form Six exams under the name Musingo Alex, a name consistent throughout his academic history.

Burundo holds a Diploma in Education from Kyambogo University, where he majored in Political Education and Geography. He later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in the same fields, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Leadership and Management from Uganda Management Institute (UMI). All qualifications were obtained under the name Musingo Alex.

“These are the same documents I have always submitted to the Electoral Commission,” he said. “I’ve been vetted before and I’m ready to be vetted again.”

Responding to concerns over the name discrepancy, Burundo explained that after returning to Bulambuli and undergoing the traditional circumcision ceremony, he was officially reintroduced to his clan as Burundo, son of Mungoma.

He later swore an affidavit to include “Burundo” as part of his legal name while maintaining “Musingo,” which appears on all academic documents.

“Using my clan name connects me to my people. It’s part of who I am,” he added.

Burundo, a former LCIII Chairperson of Bukhalu Sub-county and 10th Parliament legislator, clarified that during his tenure at the sub-county level, academic qualifications were not required, which is why such questions never emerged until he entered parliamentary politics.

He accused rival camps of reviving old claims in a bid to derail his campaign.

“There’s nothing new here. Every election season, the same characters make the same tired accusations. This is a desperate strategy because they see I still have massive grassroots support,” he remarked.

A close associate, speaking on condition of anonymity, urged the public to seek the truth before judging.

“Burundo has overcome incredible odds—socially, economically, and academically. These are cheap shots from desperate politicians,” the associate said.

Another resident from Namawanga Parish confirmed that it was common practice for boys from the home of the late Mzee Musingo Boaz to use “Musingo” as their family name, explaining the name consistency in his academic documents.

Running once again under the NRM ticket, Hon. Burundo remains resolute about his comeback bid.

“You can’t question the credentials of someone who has taught in government schools, served as LCIII Chairperson, and been a Member of Parliament,” he said. “This is the same political sabotage we’ve seen before—same petitioners, same tricks, since 2015.”
