Bunyoro, Teso leaders back Muhoozi’s 2031 presidential bid

Masindi: Political mobilisation for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 2031 presidential bid has intensified in Bunyoro and Teso sub-regions, with Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leaders in Masindi receiving endorsement books while leaders in Teso publicly backing his candidature.
In Masindi, PLU district chairman John Karuhanga says two endorsement books were received from Kampala on Thursday and are now available for residents wishing to endorse Gen. Kainerugaba.
Addressing the media at Kolping Hotel in Masindi Town, Karuhanga said the official launch of the endorsement exercise in the district is scheduled for October 8, 2026, although the venue is yet to be communicated.
He urged people wishing to endorse Gen. Kainerugaba to contact Robert Akugizibwe, also known as Robert and Sons, the PLU chairman for Masindi Municipality.
“PLU is a pressure group under the NRM party preparing Gen. Muhoozi to take over power from President Museveni when the appropriate time comes,” Karuhanga said.
NRM mobiliser for Masindi District and Labongo Sub-county councillor Wahid Juma Babyesiza called on residents to participate in the endorsement exercise regardless of their political affiliation.
Masindi Municipal male youth councillor Johnson Mugisa also urged young people to support Gen. Kainerugaba, citing what he described as his focus on youth programmes and opportunities in public service and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
However, Robert Akugizibwe cautioned residents against being misled over the leadership of PLU in Masindi, insisting that Karuhanga is the legitimate PLU district chairman.
Teso mobilisation
In Teso, more than 300 leaders and supporters from across the sub-region reportedly endorsed Gen. Kainerugaba during a meeting at Soroti Hotel.
The gathering brought together Members of Parliament, religious and cultural leaders, district chairpersons, NRM leaders and PLU supporters.
Among those who attended were Bukedea County MP David Beecham Okwere, Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang and former Amuria MP Musa Ecweru.
Okwere described Gen. Kainerugaba as a suitable leader to take charge of Uganda after the 2031 elections.
Meanwhile, Ogwang urged PLU coordinators to ensure that registration and endorsement activities are conducted freely, without charging members of the public.
“This time around, Teso is ready to be part of the decision-making process. We no longer want to be spectators,” Ogwang said.
Ogwang also warned PLU supporters against using endorsement materials to extort money from the public and called for stronger grassroots structures.
The development follows PLU’s distribution of 11 endorsement books across Teso’s 10 districts and Soroti City, with regional coordinators expected to oversee the exercise.
The endorsements are part of a nationwide PLU mobilisation campaign seeking support for Gen. Kainerugaba ahead of Uganda’s 2031 presidential election. Gen. Kainerugaba announced his intention to contest for president in 2031 earlier this month.
