The event was presided over by Major Don Nabasa, Joint Staff Policy and Strategy Officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

Jinja: In a formal handover ceremony held today at the Game War Centre boardroom, Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, Brigadier General Michael Kabango officially assumed office as the new Commandant, succeeding Major General George Igumba.

The event was presided over by Major Don Nabasa, Joint Staff Policy and Strategy Officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

In his remarks, Maj. Nabasa commended Maj. Gen. Igumba for his exceptional service to the nation, highlighting his 45-year military career. He praised Igumba’s leadership, referring to him by his popular moniker “HM” within the forces a mark of respect and recognition.

Maj. Gen. Igumba, who took over the command in August 2022, is the fourth officer to lead the institution. In his farewell address, he expressed deep gratitude to the President and to God for the guidance throughout his service. Reflecting on his journey, he likened his experience to the words of 2 Timothy 4:7–8, having “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.”

During his tenure, Maj. Gen. Igumba emphasized discipline, resilience, and setting high standards at the institution. He oversaw the training of over 828 officers from across Africa, initiated expansion plans to increase cohort sizes, and advocated for improvements in infrastructure, including plans for a fully equipped e-library.

However, he also highlighted key challenges such as limited funding, unresolved land disputes in Bujagali, and a lack of anti-plagiarism tools, calling on stakeholders to address these gaps for the future development of the college.

Incoming Commandant Brig. Gen. Kabango expressed his appreciation for the appointment and acknowledged the college as a vital center of excellence for training UPDF senior commanders. He praised his predecessor’s achievements and pledged to build on the foundation laid, emphasizing innovation, discipline, and strategic thinking.

The Uganda Senior Command and Staff College (USCSC) remains a cornerstone in the training of Uganda’s senior military leaders, serving the army, air force, and special forces.
