Gulu: The Kilak South MP, Hon. Olanya Gilbert, has encouraged the youth in the Acholi Subregion to proactively assume leadership roles without fear.

He made this statement at the Global Friendship Hotel in Gulu City during a regional stakeholders’ dialogue on June 4, 2024.

The event aimed to facilitate discussions between political actors and citizens to build consensus for a peaceful 2026 general election and potential political transition.

Hon. Olanya emphasized the importance of leaders staying connected with their voters and demonstrated his dissatisfaction with Uganda’s electoral system, particularly at the presidential level.

In her remarks, Gulu City Woman MP, Hon. Aol Betty Ocan, criticized the NRM government for allegedly co-opting well-groomed opposition politicians.

She called for shared responsibility in advocating for electoral reforms and expressed her disappointment over the actions of Uganda’s 7th Parliament, which she claimed sold the presidential term limit for only 5 million shillings each.

Nokrach Solomon, the coordinator of FOWODE, highlighted that the regional dialogue gathered stakeholders from various political spheres to discuss the possibilities for free and fair elections.
