Kagadi leaders honour late MP Besisira

At the time of his passing, Besisira was serving as a member of the Local Government Finance Committee.

Kagadi: The Kagadi District Council has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Hon. Ignatius Besisira Akiiki, former Member of Parliament for Buyaga County and later Buyaga East constituency.

Besisira, 69, passed away on Sunday at Platinum Hospital and will be laid to rest on Friday, January 17, 2025 at his ancestral home in Gayaza Cell, Pachwa Town Council.

In a special session held on Thursday, the Kagadi District Council, led by Speaker Magezi Muhonge, honored the late politician for his significant contributions to the development of Kagadi and Uganda.

Besisira’s political journey began in 1991 when he became the district councilor for Kiryanga Sub County after Kibaale was carved from Hoima District. He later served as the district speaker from 1998 to 2000, and in 2001, he won the Buyaga County parliamentary seat.

At the time of his passing, Besisira was serving as a member of the Local Government Finance Committee.

During the session, Kagadi District Vice Chairperson Semuga Vincent moved a motion to honor Besisira for his dedication to the people of Kagadi. Semuga proposed constructing a health center in Pachwa Town Council and naming it after the late politician, alongside renaming the Pachwa-Nyamipidu-Resort Hotel road in his honor.

He also suggested that the town councils of Pachwa, Kyenzige, Kagadi, and Mabaale select streets to name after Besisira.

Semuga highlighted Besisira’s role in expanding electricity access and his involvement in the creation of Kagadi District.

The councilors unanimously supported the motion and amended it to thank President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for providing financial support for Besisira’s burial.

LCV Chairperson Ndibwami B Yosia described Besisira as a leader who rose from humble beginnings and played a key role in the foundation of the district.

Bizubu George William, Executive Secretary of the Departed Asians Property Custodian Board and former Kibaale District Speaker, called Besisira a peacemaker and unifier, countering claims that he promoted tribalism.

Fr. Robert Kanyaihamba praised Besisira as a patriotic leader and encouraged Kagadi residents to honor his legacy by electing one of his sons to parliament.

Dr. Kasirivu Baltazar Atwooki, former MP for Bugangaizi West, also eulogized Besisira as a committed leader who will be deeply missed.

The family of the late politician, represented by Stephen Twesige, expressed gratitude for the support they received during his illness and praised President Museveni for granting an official burial to their father.

They expressed that this gesture has encouraged them and others to work hard to uphold their father’s legacy.

Earlier, thousands of people gathered at St. Mary’s Kagadi Catholic Church for a requiem mass, led by Monsignor Peter Kaberenge, episcopal vicar at Kagadi Vicariate.

Kaberenge described Besisira as a staunch Catholic who made significant contributions to the foundation of Kagadi Vicariate and urged the community to remain loyal and active in their faith.

Yoram Nsamba, Chairperson of the Royal Commission at Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, said the community has lost a role model and called on the youth to strive to fill the gap left by such great individuals.

Born in 1956 in Igayaza Pacwa to Rulekere John and Nyensi Kabacunda, Besisira served as a Member of Parliament for Greater Buyaga County from 2001 to 2006 and for Buyaga East County from 2011 to 2016.
