Two arrested for illegal firearm possession in Nebbi

Residents have been urged to report suspicious activities to authorities to ensure continued peace and security.

Nebbi: A well-coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of a firearm in Parombo Town Council, Nebbi District.

The operation, conducted on December 5, 2024, highlights ongoing efforts to curb illegal firearm possession in the region.

According to Collins Asea, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, the operation was carried out by UPDF personnel from the 57th Battalion in Paidha at Yusuf Guest House in Parombo Town Council.

“At approximately 8:00 PM, the team recovered a rifle with registration number 58044841 and four rounds of ammunition from a suspect, Mr. Asuman Agwoko, in Room 5 of the guest house,” Asea stated.

Further investigations revealed that the firearm allegedly originated from the wife of a UPDF officer currently deployed on a peacekeeping mission in Somalia. Asea disclosed that the officer’s wife reportedly mortgaged the firearm with an understanding that it would later be retrieved by the officer’s brother.

The case of illegal possession of a firearm has been registered under Nebbi CRB/496/2024, and the suspects are expected to face a court-martial.
“The UPDF has expressed its intent to subject the suspects to a court-martial. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided,” Asea confirmed.

This operation underscores the commitment of security forces to address illegal arms trafficking, a critical threat to public safety in the region.

Residents have been urged to report suspicious activities to authorities to ensure continued peace and security.
