Atuhura bids to run for Kiryandongo Woman MP as incumbent announces retirement

The foundation has empowered local youth, particularly students, with practical skills and resources.

Kiryandongo: Joseline Atuhura, a respected youth leader and humanitarian from Kiryandongo District, has officially announced her candidacy for the position of Woman Member of Parliament (MP) in the 2026 general elections.

This announcement follows the decision by the current Woman MP, Hon. Kahunde Helen, to retire after serving three successful terms in office.

Atuhura, known for her dedication to community service and youth empowerment, seeks to build on the legacy of her predecessor while addressing key challenges facing Kiryandongo District.

However, her candidacy has sparked some debate, with critics questioning her youth and experience for such a significant political role.

Born and raised in Kiryandongo, Atuhura’s leadership journey began early. She attended Kigumba Centre Primary School and Kigumba High School, where she was appointed head girl.

She furthered her education at East High School in Ntinda, then pursued a diploma in Business Administration and a degree in Commerce (Finance) at Makerere University Business School (MUBS). Atuhura is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Makerere University Kampala (MUK).

Despite her youth, Atuhura has made an impactful contribution to her community. She founded the Joseline Atuhura Foundation, a community-based organization focused on education, sports, skills development, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives.

The foundation has empowered local youth, particularly students, with practical skills and resources.

Her work has earned international recognition, including awards from the United Nations for her humanitarian contributions and from the Afri-Exim Bank for her expertise in intra-Africa trade.

As a USAID Youth Champion, Atuhura has advocated for improved access to sexual and reproductive health services for young mothers and adolescents.

While Atuhura’s decision to run for Woman MP has garnered some criticism, particularly around her age, she has consistently demonstrated her capacity for leadership.

Critics argue that she lacks the experience needed for a complex district like Kiryandongo. However, Atuhura has proven her critics wrong through her leadership in community projects and her role as the secretary for female youth affairs in Kiryandongo District.

During her tenure, she focused on initiatives that aimed to improve education, entrepreneurship, and the welfare of young women, further solidifying her leadership credentials.

Atuhura’s candidacy is driven by her belief that young people can be catalysts for meaningful change. If elected, she plans to continue the work of Hon. Kahunde Helen by prioritizing legislative action, effective resource allocation, and policy development to address the pressing needs of her constituents.

Her platform will focus on education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and gender equality, aiming to create a more inclusive future for Kiryandongo District.

With the 2026 election season fast approaching, Atuhura’s announcement has generated significant interest, positioning her as a key figure in the race for Woman MP in Kiryandongo District.

Despite criticism over her age, her proven track record in leadership and community service underscores her potential to represent the women and youth of Kiryandongo District.
