Buliisa flood victims receive relief items
He tasked the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Buliisa to ensure that physical planning and flood mitigation strategies are implemented to prevent further devastation.
Buliisa: On Thursday, excitement filled the air as Kakindo Women Integrated Development Agency (KAWIDA), a non-governmental organization based in Buliisa, distributed relief items to flood-affected persons in the district.
The items were aimed at alleviating the suffering of families impacted by recent floods in the region.
Among the relief items distributed were blankets, soap, tarpaulins, jerry cans, posho, and beans. Each household received the following: one blanket, three bars of soap, one tarpaulin, one jerrycan, 15kgs of beans, and 15kgs of posho.
The distribution took place in two locations: Masaka and Wanseko cells in Wanseko Town Council, where 70 households received aid, as well as in Kigwera Sub-County, where 20 flood victims in Kigwera North West, Kigwera South West, and Kisasya West also benefited from the assistance.
Harrison Asaba, the Project Coordinator at KAWIDA, expressed optimism about the organization’s continued efforts to reach more flood-affected areas. “This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to support those who have been displaced and are suffering from the devastating effects of the floods,” he stated during the handover of the items.
David Wantumbu Byarufu, a beneficiary from Kigwera North West, thanked KAWIDA for the timely support and called on other organizations to follow suit in offering assistance to the vulnerable flood victims. “We are grateful for the relief, and we hope that other organizations will join KAWIDA in bringing help to the affected areas,” he said.
Macrice Mugume, the Project Manager at KAWIDA, urged the beneficiaries to use the relief items responsibly and warned against selling the goods. “These items are meant to help you in this difficult time, so please make good use of them,” Mugume advised.
The local leadership also expressed appreciation for the relief efforts. Dismas Kahwa, the LC3 Chairperson of Wanseko Town Council, noted that the floods had left many people in dire conditions. He appealed to other organizations to come forward with additional support for the victims.
Lilian Kusiima, the Kigwera Sub-County Chief, commended KAWIDA’s intervention and urged flood survivors to avoid returning to flood-prone areas.
Buliisa District LC5 Chairperson, Fred Lukumu, emphasized the need for responsible use of the distributed items. He further tasked the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Buliisa to ensure that physical planning and flood mitigation strategies are implemented to prevent further devastation.
KAWIDA’s intervention highlights the importance of community-based support during times of crisis. The organization plans to extend its efforts to other areas severely impacted by flooding in the coming weeks.
