Kitgum: Ms. Atoo Mary, aged 48, who tragically lost her life on October 30, 2024, after being struck by a stray elephant, was laid to rest on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at her home in Oryebo Village, Pugoda East Parish, Namokora Subcounty, Kitgum District.
A member of the Bura Clan and the PTA Chairperson of Oryebo Primary School, Mary was returning from the school when the unfortunate incident occurred.
In his sermon, Rev. Fr. Okumu Alfred, the Parish Priest of Namokora Catholic Parish, praised the deceased as a devoted and committed Christian of Oryebo Chapel.
He urged believers, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and community leaders to turn to God for comfort, extending his condolences to the bereaved family in their time of sorrow.
Fr. Okumu also called upon the Uganda Wildlife Authority to prioritize human rights above the rights of animals.
Mr. Muhambe Richard, the Chief Warden of Kidepo Valley National Game Park, expressed the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s regret over the tragedy and extended apologies on their behalf.
He announced that the deceased’s family would be compensated, pending the submission of an official letter of administration to facilitate the process.
