TERRILE! Suspect commits suicide in Gulu Police Cell
He was found hanging in his cell at Unyama Police Station.
Gulu: Police in Gulu district are investigating two suspected tragic incidents of suicide.
The cases have been reported in the greater Gulu district, prompting police investigations and calls for increased mental health support.
This was revealed by the Aswa West regional Police Spokesperson, ASP David Ongom Mudong.
According to Mudong, the first incident occurred on October 12, 2024, following a suspected domestic dispute between Mwaka Justin, 60, and his wife, Ms. Apio Joyce, both residents of Unyama sub-county.
During the dispute, Mr. Mwaka set their grass-thatched hut on fire and later attempted to take his own life but was intercepted by clan members.
He was arrested and charged with arson at Unyama Sub-county police station.
On October 14, 2024, Mwaka was found hanging in the cell at Unyama Police Station.
ASP Mudong added that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and statements have been collected from relevant witnesses for further investigation.
In a similar incident, the Gulu City East Police Division reported a case of suspected suicide on October 12, 2024. The deceased, identified as Opio Felix, was found dead in Cubu Cell, Tee Gwana Ward, Laroo Pece Division.
