Masindi: Police in Masindi district have arrested two suspects for possession of marijuana and housebreaking implements.
While addressing journalists on Thursday, May 22, 2024, in his office, Emmy Ngabirano, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Masindi, said that the couple was arrested Wednesday evening during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Kijura, a suburb of Masindi town.
He disclosed that during the operation, they recovered housebreaking items, marijuana, and others. Ngabirano said that they were handed over to the police, and they were detained at Masindi Central Police Station. The case is being investigated under CRB 837/24.

The presidential representative identified the suspect as Joan Friday, while the husband couldn’t be identified by the time of publication.
He stressed that though the woman has been arrested several times, she has always been released on police bond.
Ngabirano warned the LC1 Chairpersons against issuing stamps to non-residents, stressing that it has increased crimes in the district.
He also asked the landlords to get the details of their tenants and also asked bar operators to close before 11 p.m. for their safety and the safety of their clients.
The RDC also said the operation would continue and be extended to rural subcounties and two councils until the people of Masindi have peaceful nights. ‘’We shall leave no stone unturned until the people of Masindi are at peace with their property.’’
According to reliable information, Joan has been remanded to Masindi Prisons until September 8, 2024, while her husband is yet to appear in court.
Last week, security arrested over 300 suspected criminals, screened them, and detained them over common nuisance and possession of opium.
Out of 185 people who were arrested, 66 were female, 41 were charged with being in possession of opium, and 144 were charged with common nuisance and remanded to Masindi Prisons.
In addition, 30 motorcycles were impounded during the same operation.
Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, recently told this publication that operations in the district followed the public outcry over increased theft cases.

The residents singled out sugarcane poaching, animal theft, and housebreaking as the commonest crimes that they said are hindering development in the district.
James Munaku, the LC1 Chairman for Kijura Central Cell, decried that there are individuals in his cell who grow and sell marijuana, citing Friday Joan, who was arrested several times but released.
Betty Kyomuhendo, the deputy mayor for Masindi municipality, stressed that increased theft is hampering government programs, mostly PDM and Emyooga. She stressed that in most cases, police request fuel to arrest suspected thieves, and some suspects are released on police bond.
Maj. Tom Magambo, the director of CID, said that the Uganda police force will deploy at least 18 police officers at each police post and provide patrol vehicles and a motorcycle to enable them to conduct night patrols to fight crimes in the communities.
He therefore urged the community members to cooperate with the police in order to have crime-free communities.
