Minister Magyezi wants district leaders to account for government funds

Kabarole: The Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has asked district leaders in the country to emulate Richard Rwabuhinga, the Kabarole District Chairman, by giving accountability every financial year.

Magyezi says that all over the country, Rwabuhinga is the only district chairman who gives accountability for government funds received by the district.

The Minister made the remarks while representing the Prime Minister, Robbina Nabbanja, at the annual Kabarole District Leaders’ Accountability Conference held at district headquarters in Kitumba recently.

Magyezi was impressed by the annual event, which he said other district leaders should start organizing, explaining that it ensures transparency.

“It’s really my prayer that all district chairpersons emulate you in giving accountability to their voters. This indicates openness, and it enhances better service delivery. It’s really a good initiative, and it should be maintained,” Magyezi said.

The annual event, which is organized at the end of every financial year, attracts local leaders from all subcounties and town councils. Richard Rwabuhinga highlighted the projects implemented in all sectors of the district, such as health, education, and transport, among others.

He, however, revealed that the district is operating with a limited budget to effectively deliver services to communities. Rwabuhinga asked the Minister to ensure that the government extends electricity to the subcounties of Harugongo and Karangura, among other areas.

“Hon. Minister, there are some subcounties like Harugongo and Karangura that even don’t have a single electricity pole; other areas in other subcounties have never received electricity. We kindly request that you take up this matter and inform relevant agencies for consideration,” Rwabuhinga explained.

The district boss also informed the minister of unfilled presidential pledges in Kabarole District, such as the construction of Kijura and Security Roads, the establishment of an industrial park, and Buhinga Stadium, among others that need attention.

Speaking at the same function, Businge Victoria Rusoke, the state minister for local government, asked leaders to desist from belittling fellow leaders and ensure working for the people.

She condemned acts of propaganda and malice among leaders. The event attracted thousands of local council leaders, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and government officials, among others.
