Angry Buliisa residents chase away road gangs, demand rehabilitation
The road gangs had gone for routine maintenance of the road but were fouled by residents.
Buliisa: Angry residents of Bukumi village in Nyamasoga Parish, Biiso Sub County, Buliisa district, on Friday chased road gangs over the poor state of the Nyamasoga-Bukumi road.
The road gangs had gone for routine maintenance of the road but were fouled by residents.
The residents protested and accused the district leadership of failing to rehabilitate the above road, stressing that the road should be rehabilitated like any other road.
Marko Ukengo says they decided to stop the road gangs from slashing the road due to the poor state of their road, claiming it requires routine rehabilitation since it has potholes that can easily cause accidents.
‘’If all the roads in the sub county have been maintained, why not ours? We shall not allow the road gangs when our road is in a poor state,’’ they vowed.
Felix Jakwonga, the LC2 Chairperson for Nyamasoga Parish, also appealed to the government to intervene, stating that the road is in a bad state.
The road gangs told this publication on conditions of anonymity that when they arrived at the road, they were chased away by angry locals.
Vincent Mukonyezi, the male district councilor representing Biiso Sub County, who also doubles as the deputy district council speaker, asked for calmness, noting that the road fund was released to the subcounties and the road will soon be rehabilitated.
The LC3 Chairperson for Biiso Sub County, Mr. Denis Oyewa, disclosed that there is a delay due to a lack of enough road machines, saying the only grader available is being shared in all the subcounties.
Oyewa assured the locals that the road would be worked on very soon, but asked for calmness.
However, the district engineer`s comment, Mr. Maurice Wekame, was futile since the repeated phone calls arranged for him went unanswered by the time of publication.
