VIDEO! Angry Bunyoro FDC members burn Amuriat’s posters

Masindi: A section of angry Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) members in the Bunyoro subregion has burned posters of the FDC party president, Patrick Oboi Amuriat.
FDC is a prominent political party in Uganda, and Amuriat serves as its president for the Najjanankumbi faction.
The burning of posters occurred on Sunday April 14, 2024 after a regional planning meeting to welcome the FDC Katonga faction on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
The posters in question were from the 2021 presidential campaign and were prominently displayed in the FDC office in Masindi.
According to party members, their frustration stems from Amuriat and his group allegedly dining with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
They perceive this as a betrayal of FDC principles and an acceptance of financial support from Museveni, who is often criticized by opposition parties.
The burning of the posters symbolizes their disapproval and desire to distance themselves from those they believe compromise the party’s integrity.
Jenifer Karungi, the FDC chairperson for Hoima City, explained that they decided to burn Amuriat’s posters because they believe he and his Najjanankumbi team received taxpayers’ money from President Museveni.
The party members demand accountability and an apology from Amuriat and his team.
Karungi stated that forgiveness would be possible if Amuriat and his group returned the money received to President Museveni.
Joseph Byaruhanga, the FDC chairman of Kakumiro district, labelled Amuriat and his team as hypocrites who misused their entrusted powers.
The tension within the party highlights differing views on how to maintain FDC’s integrity and principles.
Fredrick Banage, former FDC Chairman for Masindi district, emphasized in an exclusive interview that no individual is bigger than the party itself, emphasizing the FDC’s resilience despite defections and the formation of new parties.
During his press address on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the FDC Party Headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Amuriat clarified the party’s stance on members leaving to establish new political parties.
He cited Article 29(1)(e) of the Ugandan constitution, which guarantees the freedom to form and join associations, including political organizations.
Amuriat added that within the FDC, there exists freedom of entry and exit, allowing colleagues operating at Katonga Road (presumably the FDC Katonga faction) to potentially evolve into a fully-fledged political party if they choose to do so.
He, however, said FDC places significant emphasis on dialogue and reconciliation, as recommended by the Special Elders Committee, adding that this commitment underscores their dedication to improving the party and maintaining unity.
Despite these principles, tensions continue within the FDC Katonga faction. Amuriat decried the accusations that have arisen regarding the forceful removal of party leaders.
He acknowledged familiarity with his colleagues’ operational methods due to past collaborations.
Amuriat made it clear that violence will not be tolerated; vowing that any attempts to dislodge legally elected leaders from party headquarters will be met with an appropriate response.
Katonga faction visit to Bunyoro
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party members in Bunyoro are gearing up for the anticipated visit of the FDC Katonga faction headed by Dr. Kiiza Besigye, a prominent figure in Ugandan politics.
Dr. Kiiza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate on the FDC ticket, is expected to visit the Bunyoro sub-region.
His visit aims to engage with FDC leaders from the Katonga faction, fostering dialogue and collaboration.
Zubairi Atalyebwa Bukyanagandi, the FDC party chairman for Masindi district, is spearheading preparations.
He said meetings are being conducted to plan and mobilize resources for fruitful engagements during Besigye’s visit.
Besigye’s itinerary includes consultative meetings and rallies.
The visit will commence in Masindi and Hoima, allowing members to exchange views and discuss critical matters.
Zubairi, however, said specific dates for Besigye’s visits will be communicated later. He encouraged members to participate actively in these gatherings.
