TERRIBLE! Two children drown in an uncovered Zombo pit

Their parents, unaware of the danger, had left them unattended while tending to their garden work.

Zombo: The tragic incident in Zombo District, where two young lives were lost, highlights the grave consequences of negligence and uncovered pits.

The victims, 1-year-old Ocandi Asinata and 2-year-old Tamara Vion, both residents of Alisithungu cell, Dwonga ward, Paidha Town Council, met their untimely demise after heavy rainfall filled an open pit in their compound.

The incident happened on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

The pit, left unattended and uncovered, became a perilous trap for the innocent children.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed that this tragedy resulted from a combination of rash actions and negligence.

The police promptly visited the scene, documented the incident, and retrieved the bodies.

Statements from witnesses were recorded, and the individual responsible for digging the pit was arrested to aid in investigations.

Their parents, unaware of the danger, had left them unattended while tending to their garden work.

Angucia advises the public to never leave pits uncovered, especially during the rainy season, adding that the public should take heed and ensure the safety of their homes and communities.

‘’Whether they are dug for constructing latrines or for any other purpose, proper covering is essential to prevent such tragic accidents.’’
