Arrested security guard kills himself over missing mosquito nets
He was confirmed dead this morning at Masindi General Hospital

Masindi: A security guard attached to Kigezi Health Centre III in Mirya Sub County Masindi district has died after he allegedly took poison after thieves broke into the health center and stole a consignment of items during his time on duty.
Ayesiga Steven, 42, was confirmed dead this morning at Masindi General Hospital. He was a resident of Bigando Cell, Bigando Ward, Kigulya Division, Masindi Municipality.
Mabyala Muhammad, the secretary of Kigezi Village, told ugreports.com that Ayesiga recorded a statement with Masindi Central Police Station after thieves broke into the health facility and stole items, including 10 bales of mosquito nets and other items, on the night of December 8th.
He, however, took a poisonous substance when he learned that the police would close him up in the cells. ‘’In the process of arresting him, he took poisonous substances, and this prompted us to take him to the hospital for medication,’’ he added.
Meanwhile, Ayesiga Robinah, the wife of the deceased, says her husband was so confined to her that he was stressed. ‘’My husband has been battling with ulcers and stomach complications; he told me that he was so stressed before he died,’’ she added.
Basemera Margret, the deceased’s mother, too blames stress for her son’s death, demanding compensation from the government. ‘’We are appealing for government compensation because my son has died as a result of the missing mosquito nets,’’ she requested.
The deceased has survived with three children, and by the time we filed this story, the lifeless body of Ayesiga Steven was still at Masindi General Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine regional police spokesperson, confirmed the death incident but could not give details because he was attending a meeting.
Recently, the in-charge of Kigezi Health Centre III, the nurse, and the deceased were arrested for missing 10 bales of government mosquito nets. Each bale of mosquito nets contains 40 mosquito nets.
Masindi district received 161 bales of mosquito nets. According to the Acting District Health Officer for Masindi, Dr. Jino Abiriga, beside the mosquito nets, other items like coartem and malaria testing kits were also stolen.
According to Sanon Dhaala, the deputy resident district commissioner for Masindi, the mosquito nets, which are stored at different health centers, will be distributed on Saturday this week.
