Buliisa: The theater at Biiso Health Center IV in Buliisa district is dysfunctional due to the failure by the government to deploy an anesthetic technician.
The facility was elevated from health center III to IV in 2021, and the theater was constructed at the facility in order to extend services to the community and reduce the number of referrals.
Now, speaking to this publication On Monday morning, Dr. Peter Otim, the facility in-charge, said even though they have enough staff in some departments, the facility lacks anesthetic technicians, thus affecting service delivery.
Otim therefore requests that the Buliisa district local government recruit an anesthetic technician to avoid referrals, yet the theater is lying idle due to the lack of specialists.
On the other side, he also said the facility is crippled by inadequate drugs due to the increasing number of patients and security threats since the facility is partially fenced.
Dr. Mugabe Robert, the District Health Educator (DHE) in Buliisa, acknowledges the challenge of a lack of anesthetic technicians at Biiso Health Centre IV hospital, saying they advertised last year but it was halted.
Mugabe noted that they have about two medics from the district who went to upgrade their studies, and they have a hope of being deployed when they complete their studies. According to Mugabe, one will be deployed at Buliisa Health Centre IV and another at Biiso Health Centre IV.
‘’It’s true we don’t have anesthetic technicians at Biiso Health Center IV. Last year, we advertised, but the advertisement was later halted due to a lack of funds. We shall write to the permanent secretary at the health ministry to allow us to advertise,’’ he said, adding that ‘’Two of our medics went to upgrade their studies; when we advertise and they apply and succeed, we shall deploy them at Biiso Health Center IV and Buliisa Health Centre IV, respectively’’.
Biiso Health Center IV was constructed in 1995 and serves at least 300 people on a daily basis.
