Hoima RCC orders cancellation of market tenancy agreements

“Effective today, no landlord will be allowed to operate in Hoima Central Market. This market was constructed to support poor people.”

Hoima: The Resident City Commissioner of Hoima City, Badru Mugabi, has directed the Hoima City Town Clerk to cancel tenancy agreements signed between Hoima City Council and tenants at Hoima Central Market.

Mugabi accuses some individuals of operating as landlords in the market and extorting money from vendors through rent charges.

He issued the directive this morning while meeting market vendors at Hoima Central Market to address challenges affecting their businesses.

The RCC also directed that parking fees charged to customers visiting the market to purchase goods be removed.

Mugabi said the concerns raised by vendors must be addressed to improve their working environment and support business activities.

“Effective today, no landlord will be allowed to operate in Hoima Central Market. This market was constructed to support poor people.”

Mugabi also said the authorities would address a dispute involving two individuals identified as Flora and Florence, which he said had caused commotion in the market.

He said the meeting was intended to resolve the dispute and restore harmony among vendors.

The RCC further directed that padlocks on shops allegedly locked by individuals waiting to rent them out be broken and the shops allocated to vendors.

“We are going to break the padlocks of shops that have been locked by people waiting to rent them out. These shops should instead be given to the people.”

Some market vendors commended Mugabi for intervening in the matter, saying his actions would protect them from individuals they accused of collecting high rental fees from them.
