Lightning kills couple during heavy downpour in Zombo

The incident comes just days after another woman survived a lightning strike in Serr Parish, Abanga Sub-County.

Zombo:  A woman and her husband have been killed by lightning during a heavy downpour in Oguta Village, Mundhel Parish, Nyapea Sub-County, Zombo District.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026.

The deceased woman has been identified as Adoku, while her husband was identified as Arua.

Eliot Odongo, the Mundhel Parish councillor, confirmed the incident, saying the woman’s relatives from Aringu in Atyak Sub-County had collected her remains.

“The relatives of the woman from Aringu in Atyak have already collected her body, while the family of the man from Erussi Sub-County was on its way to collect his remains,” Odongo said.

The incident comes just days after another woman survived a lightning strike in Serr Parish, Abanga Sub-County.

It also comes about two months after eight people were struck by lightning in Aka Sub-County in the same district.

Lightning incidents remain a recurring concern in parts of Uganda, particularly during heavy rains.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister’s 2020 Annual State of Disaster Report, Uganda experiences about 70 lightning strikes per square kilometre annually, with an estimated 20 to 50 lightning-related deaths recorded each year.
