Namisindwa seeks government support amid El Niño raves threat

Namisindwa: Namisindwa District Local Government has appealed to the government for emergency support as the district prepares for possible heavy rains and flooding associated with the anticipated El Niño weather conditions.

In a letter dated September 3, 2026, addressed to the Prime Minister, the Namisindwa District Chairperson, Emma Bwayo, said the district is likely to experience the effects of El Niño following several alerts from the Ministry of Water and Environment and weather advisories from the Uganda Meteorological Department.

According to Bwayo, 29 sub-counties, comprising 163 parishes and 1,547 villages, have been identified as likely to be affected by the anticipated rains.
The district estimates its total population at about 264,000 people, who may require support in the event of disasters resulting from the heavy rains.

He said the district requires approximately 1,000 kilograms of maize flour and 500 kilograms of beans to support affected communities.

The district is also seeking 500 tarpaulins for emergency shelter, as well as approximately 600 pieces of iron sheets to support schools and other institutions that could be affected by the rains.

The appeal comes amid growing preparations by local authorities and communities across the country to mitigate the possible effects of El Niño, including flooding, landslides and destruction of infrastructure.
The district chairperson urged the central government to provide the requested assistance to enable Namisindwa to adequately prepare for and respond to any emergencies arising from the anticipated weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Namisindwa District Local Government has renewed its appeal to the Office of the Prime Minister to expedite the relocation of households affected by landslides in the district.

In a letter dated September 3, 2026, District Chairperson Emma Bwayo said Namisindwa remains one of the disaster prone districts in the Elgon Region, with landslides, floods and rainstorms affecting communities almost every year.

Bwayo said that on November 8, 2025, a team from the Office of the Prime Minister, led by Elungat Solomon, provided a list of households affected in ten sub-counties, including Bupoto, Bumbo, Bukokho, Buwangani, Tsukekulu, Luwa, Mukoto and Bumbo Town Council.

He noted that the lists were subsequently verified on February 24, 2026, and the verified report was submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister on March 6, 2026, to facilitate the relocation exercise.
The district chairperson said the latest letter is a follow up to the Chief Administrative Officer’s earlier submission of the verified report, urging the government to proceed with the relocation arrangements.

The appeal comes as the district also seeks government support to prepare for anticipated El Niño rains, which could worsen landslides and other disasters in the mountainous district.
