14 confirmed dead along Kampala – Masaka Highway crash
Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the deadly collision as authorities continue to appeal to motorists to exercise caution, especially during night travel.
Kalungu: At least 14 people have been confirmed dead following a horrific road crash at Lwera Swamp along the Kampala–Masaka Highway in Kalungu District on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026.
The fatal crash occurred at around 11:00 p.m. at Kamunga Trading Centre and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sino truck, registration number UBS 040F, which was transporting sand.
Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson Kasirye Twaha confirmed that all 14 people who died were occupants of the taxi.
“Fourteen people died on the spot, and all the deceased were passengers in the Toyota Hiace taxi,” Twaha said.
He added that four people sustained injuries, with two victims from each vehicle rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
“The injured were admitted to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, and efforts to trace the fleeing truck driver are underway,” Twaha added.
