Dozens feared dead after bus carrying pupils overturns in Kapchorwa

Kapchwora: Several learners are feared dead following a tragic road crash involving a school bus carrying pupils of Kings David Junior School, Ndejje, in Kapchorwa District on Thursday evening.

The fatal crash occurred at around 8:00 pm at Chekwatit Village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county, according to the Uganda Police Force.

The bus, registration number UA 108BQ, was transporting pupils when it overturned under circumstances that are yet to be established.

Police confirmed the incident but said the exact number of people killed or injured was still being verified as rescue operations continued.

Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed the crash in an official statement.

“The Uganda Police Force confirms that police in Kapchorwa have this evening registered a fatal road traffic crash involving a school bus, registration number UA 108BQ, transporting pupils of Kings David Junior School, Ndejje,” Kananura said.

He added that police were still assessing the scene to establish the extent of the casualties.

“At this stage, the exact number of fatalities and injuries has not yet been confirmed. More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available,” Kananura stated.

Emergency responders and police officers were deployed to the scene to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby health facilities, while investigations into the cause of the crash have commenced.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as official information on the number of casualties and the identities of the victims is expected after verification.
