CNOOC nears completion of equipment testing at Kingfisher Oil Project

Mbigiti said once operational, the plant will begin producing gas for cooking and electricity generation, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for LPG imports.

Hoima: CNOOC Uganda Limited is in the final stages of testing equipment at the Central Processing Facility (CPF) installed under the Kingfisher Development Project, ahead of the commencement of official oil production.

This was revealed during a media training held in Hoima, organized by the company to update journalists on progress at the Kingfisher project.

Andrew Mbigiti, the Media and Publicity Supervisor at CNOOC Uganda Limited, said the facility is currently undergoing pre-commissioning and commissioning processes, which involve thorough testing of installed equipment.

Mbigiti explained that the testing is done in phases, starting with individual equipment checks before progressing to integrated system testing to ensure efficiency and safety before full-scale production begins.

He further noted that Uganda currently imports all its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) used for cooking. However, this is set to change with the completion of an LPG plant at the Kingfisher development area.

Mbigiti said once operational, the plant will begin producing gas for cooking and electricity generation, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for LPG imports.

Robert Muganyizi, a Production Operations Engineer at CNOOC Uganda Limited, emphasized that gas produced during oil extraction will be fully utilized rather than wasted.

He highlighted its benefits, including electricity generation and cooking gas production, which will contribute to the country’s energy mix.

Meanwhile, Ms. Yvette K. Muyingo, Head of Corporate Affairs at CNOOC Uganda Limited, said the media training was aimed at not only providing updates but also equipping journalists with technical knowledge on oil and gas reporting.

Muyingo noted that the training would enhance the media’s capacity to deliver more accurate, insightful, and impactful stories, emphasizing that journalists are key stakeholders in the oil production process.

She added that the company will continue to create engagement platforms to ensure timely access to information.
