SAD! Another victim of suspected Kagadi arson dies
Reports indicate that the attackers left behind a note accusing Katatumbwa of witchcraft and immoral conduct.
Kagadi: The Imam of Burora Mosque in Burora Sub-county, Mwalimu Ausi Katatumbwa, has died from severe burn injuries sustained in a suspected arson attack on his home in Mabaale Town Council, Kagadi district.
According to Mwalimu Musa Iboona, Imam of Mabaale Town Mosque, Katatumbwa died on Wednesday at Kiruddu Referral Hospital, where he had been admitted since Tuesday morning.
His body is expected to be returned to his home in Kyabahita Cell for a vigil ahead of burial on Thursday in Mburamaizi Village, Kinyarugonjo Sub-county.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 2:00 a.m. in Mabaale North Cell when unknown assailants allegedly set the house ablaze using petrol.
The fire claimed the life of a three-year-old girl at the scene, while Katatumbwa and his wife, Sofia, sustained critical injuries. Sofia remains in critical condition at Kiruddu Referral Hospital.
Police have since arrested two suspects, Sheikh Tibenda Twalib and Aguma Aramanzan reportedly a relative of the deceased to assist with ongoing investigations.
Sheikh Haji Muhammed Isingoma, the Kibaale District Muslim Kadhi, has called on police to conduct thorough investigations to ensure justice for the victims. He also urged residents to remain calm, maintain peace, and embrace forgiveness during this difficult time.
An eyewitness, Gloria Asikora, said she heard cries for help during the night and later discovered that the house had been locked from the outside using wires, preventing escape. Neighbors managed to rescue the couple, but the child had already died.
