Two medical officers remanded over theft of government drugs in Hoima
Both accused persons denied the charges and applied for bail.

Hoima: The Hoima Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded two medical officers to Kiryateete Government Prison on charges related to the alleged theft of government drugs at Kapapi Health Centre III.
The accused are Rostiko Akugizibwe, 32, a resident of Rukooge Cell in Hoima West City Division and former in-charge of Kapapi Health Centre III, and Stella Kabasindi, 41, a resident of Bucunga Cell in Hoima East City Division and a medical records assistant at the same facility.
According to the prosecution, Akugizibwe allegedly sold 72 pieces of contraceptive implants valued at Shs2,120,000 on October 27, 2025, while serving as the facility’s in-charge. He is also charged with neglect of duty, which allegedly led to the theft of drugs at the health centre.
Kabasindi is accused of stealing 136 pieces of implants valued at Shs4,523,000 between August 2025 and March 2026. She also faces a charge of neglect of duty for allegedly failing to properly record medical supplies, which resulted in the loss of drugs.
Both accused persons denied the charges and applied for bail.
However, Chief Magistrate George Kunihira declined to hear their bail application, citing the absence of the state attorney. The state attorney had reportedly been called from the High Court to handle only plea-taking at the Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The magistrate consequently remanded the duo to Kiryateete Government Prison until April 7, 2026, when their bail application will be heard.
Last week, Julius Allan Hakiza, the Greater Albertine Region Police spokesperson confirmed the arrest of five suspects in connection with the theft of drugs at Kapapi Health Centre III.
The arrests followed the discovery of drugs believed to have been stolen from the facility and found unattended at Hoima Taxi Park.
However, only two suspects were presented in court, with the prosecution indicating that the other suspects are still at large.
