SAGE cash delivery team cheats death in Namisindwa accident

Residents have increasingly described the road as a “death trap,” blaming years of neglect for repeated accidents, especially during the rainy season.

Namisindwa: Several people sustained serious injuries after a vehicle transporting government staff overturned along the deteriorating Nabukhuya–Sipande road, sparking renewed public anger over years of infrastructure neglect.

The accident occurred at around 6:00 pm on March 23, 2026, involving a private vehicle carrying staff implementing the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) programme.

The SAGE initiative, run under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, provides a monthly cash transfer of UGX 25,000 to elderly beneficiaries. Programme staff often move from sub-county to sub-county, physically delivering cash to recipients.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was returning from Bukhaweka Sub-county when it overturned on a nearly impassable section of the road.

Occupants reportedly sustained serious injuries due to washed-away gravel, deep gullies and slippery conditions caused by heavy rains.

The LCV Councilor-elect for Bukhaweka, Jude Wamutanga, confirmed the incident and described the situation as critical.

He emphasized that the road is vital not only for livelihoods but also for the safe delivery of essential government services.

Namisindwa LCV Chairperson-elect, Emma Bwayo, pledged to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Nabukhuya–Sipande road during his term.

He also encouraged the SAGE programme team to adopt mobile cash transfer systems to reduce the need for elderly beneficiaries to travel long distances, and to minimize risks to staff.

Residents have increasingly described the road as a “death trap,” blaming years of neglect for repeated accidents, especially during the rainy season.

Police had not yet issued an official statement by press time.
