Hoima City: Women leaders in Hoima City are preparing to hold belated celebrations for International Women’s Day on April 17, 2026, at Mpaija Primary School in Kasingo Ward.
Speaking during a planning meeting, Hellen Azikiya, the Chairperson of the Women’s League in Hoima City, emphasized the importance of commemorating the day and appreciating the National Resistance Movement government for empowering women to participate in economic activities.
Azikiya said the decision to hold the celebrations at Mpaija Primary School aims to engage the surrounding community in supporting the school’s development and improving its standards.
Susan Nafuna Wandege, the Community Development Officer for Hoima City, highlighted the significance of the day, noting that it provides an opportunity to recognize women’s contributions toward the country’s development.
Nafuna called upon women and other stakeholders to support the event to ensure colorful and successful celebrations.
Several women who attended the meeting expressed gratitude to the government for recognizing Women’s Day, noting that government empowerment programs have significantly improved their livelihoods.
They said that through government funds aimed at supporting women’s projects, many have been able to buy land, construct houses, and pay school fees for their children.
However, Saudah Kyakuhaire, the women’s leader for Bujumbura East, noted that one of the challenges still hindering women’s progress is the spread of rumors, distractions, and sometimes misleading advice among themselves.
