Masindi Woman MP Asiimwe joins race to unseat Among
The race for the top legislative seat has intensified, with at least six individuals expressing interest.
Kampala: Dr. Asiimwe Florence Akiiki, the Woman Member of Parliament for Masindi District, has declared her interest in contesting for the Speakership of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.s
She made the declaration on Wednesday, February 25, 2025 in Uganda’s Capital Kampala.
Asiimwe said her bid will focus on combating corruption, promoting transparency, restoring constitutional order, and ensuring that Parliament’s rules and procedures are strictly followed.
She also emphasized the need for parliamentary committees to operate independently without interference. The race for the top legislative seat has intensified, with at least six individuals expressing interest.
Among those expected to contest is the incumbent Speaker, Anita Annet Among, who assumed office following the death of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah. Although she has not formally confirmed her candidacy, the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission indicated that during a Central Executive Committee meeting of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), members resolved to maintain the status quo in the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Bukono County MP-elect and State Minister for Housing, Persis Namuganza, has already declared her intention to run. She pledged to restore the dignity of Parliament and ensure effective representation of Ugandans.
Norbert Mao, President General of the Democratic Party and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has also confirmed his bid, citing the fight against corruption and electoral irregularities as key priorities.
Other contenders include Lydia Wanyoto, an NRM Central Executive Committee member and MP-elect for Mbale City, who points to her qualifications and experience as strengths, and Yorke Odria Alioni, the MP for Aringa South County, also an NRM member.
All aspirants say they have conducted consultations and secured sufficient support ahead of the election of the Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, scheduled for May this year. The list of contenders is expected to grow as more candidates formally declare their intentions.
