Kagadi parents, PTA reject newly posted head teacher
She noted that the district is grappling with a shortage of more than 600 teachers following the Ministry of Education’s suspension of Grade Three teacher training.
Kagadi: The School Management Committee and Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) of Nyamiti Primary School in Nyamiti Ward, Muhorro Town Council, Kagadi District on Wednesday staged a protest and chased away a newly appointed head teacher shortly after she reported for duty.
The parents, led by PTA Chairperson Peter Kyalingonza and Nakasumba Sawari Musafiri, rejected the posting of Night Karali, accusing her of poor performance at her previous duty stations.
They cited concerns over her leadership record and personal conduct, saying they did not believe she was suitable to head the school.
Parents instead endorsed Tuhaise Meridah, who has been serving in an acting capacity following the departure of former head teacher Tumusiime Charles. They argued that she has demonstrated strong leadership and improved performance at the school.
Samuel Becker, Head of Laity at Kahyoro Church of Uganda, the school’s foundation body, supported the parents’ stance and called on the Kagadi District Education Department to post what he described as a competent and capable head teacher.
Haji Abdallah Rukyarekere, Secretary for Education at Muhorro Town Council, also faulted the appointment, urging district authorities to ensure that Nyamiti Primary School does not suffer from ineffective leadership.
In response, Kagadi District Education Officer Mbabazi Beatrice condemned the manner in which the protest was conducted and appealed for calm among parents and PTA members.
She noted that the district is grappling with a shortage of more than 600 teachers following the Ministry of Education’s suspension of Grade Three teacher training.
Mbabazi said the district education department would convene a special meeting to resolve the impasse and ensure continuity of leadership at the school.
Night Karali has previously served at Ruswiga Primary School, Kyakadehe Primary School in Pachwa, and Mpamba Primary School in Kyenzige Town Council before her transfer to Nyamiti Primary School.
