Wandera elected Buliisa LC5 Chairperson after 20 years of resilience

Buliisa: Wandera Atuhairwe Twari (WAT) has been declared the newly elected LC5 Chairperson of Buliisa District after defeating the incumbent, Fred Lukumu, in the 2026 general elections held on Thursday.

WAT has contested for the same position since 2006 and was finally declared the winner on Friday.

According to the Buliisa District Returning Officer, Robert Kunihira, Atuhairwe, who contested as an Independent candidate, garnered 15,416 votes, defeating Lukumu, the NRM flag bearer, who obtained 12,637 votes.

Other candidates in the race included Serermoth Kahwa, who polled 308 votes; Onechan John, an Independent, with 752 votes; and Edison Oryema of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who received 162 votes.

Kunihira officially declared Wandera Atuhairwe Twari the duly elected LC5 Chairperson for Buliisa District after tallying results from all polling stations.

In a related development, the incumbent Vice Chairperson, Vincent Mukonyezi, also lost his bid for re-election. Mukonyezi, who contested as an Independent, was defeated by Francis Chan-Wat of NRM in the race for directly elected male district councilor representing Biiso Sub County, polling 1,165 votes against Chan-Wat’s 1,267 votes.

Meanwhile, in Hoima District, the incumbent LC5 Chairperson, Uthuman Mugisa Mubaraka Kadiri, retained his seat after polling 25,347 votes, defeating NRM flag bearer Vincent Muhumuza Savanah, who scored 19,541 votes.

In Kapapi Sub County, Nyandera Nefisa, the NRM female district flag bearer, won the race after defeating the incumbent Independent candidate Lilian Busobozi, polling 1,546 votes against 710.

In Kiganja Sub County, Jackson Mugenyi Mulindabora, an Independent, also retained his position after beating NRM’s Luzira Oromo, polling 1,425 votes against 1,220.
