Hoima city council approves handover of Booma Ground to NCS for AFCON 2027 Training Facility

Hoima: Hoima City Council has voted to hand over 6.5 hectares of Booma Ground to the National Council of Sports (NCS) for the development of a training facility ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The decisiont HB Hotel, where 8 out of 10 councilors voted in favour of the handover.

However, Margret Monday, the Hoima City Minister for Works, and councilor Iddi Magezi opposed the move, arguing that it was wrong to release the land without first consulting community members.

Mayor Brian Kaboyo argue was reached during an extraordinary council meeting held on Wednesday ad that public consultations were unnecessary, saying residents had already delegated decision-making powers to councilors when they elected them into office.

He appreciated the eight council members who supported the decision and urged locals to prepare for upcoming job opportunities such as supplying sand, cement, and other materials once the project breaks ground.

Councilor for male workers Patrick Mugabi backed the handover, saying transferring the Booma Ground land title to the NCS would safeguard it. He noted that with NCS holding the title, the land would be protected from politicians or “mafias” who might attempt to alter its intended use.

Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato proposed holding public meetings (Baraza) in Hoima East and Hoima West to inform residents about the development.

Nyakato emphasized that Booma Ground will serve as an AFCON 2027 training facility, stressing that NCS has assured leaders the land will not be subdivided or mortgaged.

She added that such investments are vital for boosting business and accelerating the transformation of Hoima City.
