Buliisa widow left homeless after arson attack over family dispute

“If there are family misunderstandings, they should be resolved peacefully. Resorting to violence and destruction is unacceptable,” Kugonza said.

Buliisa: A widow in Buliisa District has been left homeless after her home was allegedly set ablaze in the early hours of Thursday morning in what is suspected to be a family-related dispute.

Apoti Biwaga, a resident of Kahemura Cell in Biiso Town Council, Buliisa District, said the incident occurred between 2:00 and 3:00 am when unknown individuals set fire to her three grass-thatched houses.

According to Biwaga, the attack may be linked to ongoing disputes within her family. She revealed that a relative had recently threatened her life, though the exact motive remains unclear.

“I have been left with nothing. I am appealing to the government, NGOs, and local leaders to come to my aid. I have no means to support my family,” Biwaga tearfully pleaded.

Her son, Julius Jakisa, who was sleeping in one of the houses at the time, recounted the terrifying moment. “I was woken up by intense heat and thick smoke. I screamed for help,” he said.

Abudu Rashid Kugonza, the General Secretary of the village, confirmed the incident and strongly condemned the act. “If there are family misunderstandings, they should be resolved peacefully. Resorting to violence and destruction is unacceptable,” Kugonza said.

He also confirmed that police have been notified and investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the fire and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Efforts to get a comment from Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, were unsuccessful by press time as he did not respond to phone calls.
