Nasubo declares candidacy for Jinja City Woman MP Seat
In response to speculation about what she would do if denied the NUP ticket, Nasubo was firm but diplomatic.

Jinja: As Uganda’s 2026 General Elections draw closer, political momentum in Jinja City is surging. Florence Nasubo, a passionate National Unity Platform (NUP) member, has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the Woman Member of Parliament seat, currently held by Manjeri Kyebakutika.
At a press conference held at the NUP offices in Jinja City, Nasubo outlined her vision for revitalizing the city under the banner “Resetting Jinja City Together Through Collaborative Efforts.” Her proposed leadership strategy is anchored on the “Triple T” agenda Trade, Transport, and Tourism which she believes are key pillars for economic revival.
In her address, Nasubo criticized the deteriorating infrastructure in Jinja and called out the incumbent MP for what she termed as “ineffective advocacy.” She recalled the city’s former glory in the 1990s, highlighting the now-defunct daily flights from Kimaka Airstrip to Kisumu and Entebbe as a symbol of lost potential.
“Kimaka used to have two flights daily, one to Kisumu and another to Entebbe. Today, we see nothing. Our roads are in terrible condition, and we’ve seen no real lobbying from the current leadership,” she said.
Nasubo also raised concerns about tourism infrastructure, pointing to neglected roads leading to key attractions like Itanda Falls and Budondo. “Our tourism sector is suffering. Poor road networks are keeping tourists away, and this directly impacts youth employment and poverty,” she added.
Her campaign, however, faced early resistance. A planned consultative meeting at Murchison Hotel was blocked by police, citing fears of possible disruption. The gathering was eventually relocated to the NUP headquarters.
Buuba Habib Junior, the NUP spokesperson for Jinja City, emphasized the party’s commitment to internal democracy. “NUP welcomes all aspirants. This is where democracy starts,” he said.
In response to speculation about what she would do if denied the NUP ticket, Nasubo was firm but diplomatic. “If the process is transparent and I am not chosen, I will respectfully step down. But if the process lacks transparency, I will run as an independent,” she said confidently, adding, “I am certain NUP will give me the ticket.”
Nasubo, a native of Buwenda Parish, is currently pursuing a degree in Public Health and Psychology at UOP University and holds a diploma in Tourism and Hospitality. She pledged to be “the darling of Jinja” if elected, promising to bring energetic and visionary leadership to the city.
Nakabugo Hadija, a member of the event’s organizing committee, condemned the intimidation they faced. “We invited people from all political affiliations for a peaceful dialogue, but the threats forced us to cancel the hotel venue.”
Several residents voiced frustration over the current MP’s performance. “All we see are her banners. We want someone who will speak, lobby, and bring real development,” one community member said.
With other strong contenders including incumbent Manjeri Kyebakutika, Lwasasula Sarah, and expected candidates from NRM, FDC, and DP, the Jinja City Woman MP race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the region.
