Pakwach football fan succumbs to heart attack during match

Pakwach: Tragedy struck at the Bar Omac Playground in Pakwach Town Council on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, when Hope Mungubitimu, a devoted Pakwach Young Stars FC fan, collapsed and died after witnessing her team’s heartbreaking loss to UPDF FC in the Uganda Cup Round of 32 match.

The intense game ended 0-0 in regular time, leading to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, where UPDF FC triumphed 8-7, eliminating Pakwach Young Stars on their home turf.

Witnesses say Mungubitimu, a Senior Two student at Pakwach Secondary School, collapsed during the penalty shootout. She was rushed to Pakwach Mission Health Center III, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Pakwach Young Stars FC confirmed the tragic incident on their official Facebook page, revealing that the staunch fan had suffered a heart attack.

“On a very sad note, we regret to announce the untimely death of Mungubitimu Hope, a very staunch fan of ours who passed away this evening due to a heart attack after our hotly contested football match with UPDF.”

The club further acknowledged the deep pain her family is enduring, adding: “We continue to grieve with the family. May her soul rest in peace. Till we meet again.”

Patrick Okecha, the Headteacher of Pakwach Secondary School, described the deceased as an enthusiastic football supporter who had never shown any signs of illness.

“It is deeply regrettable. We extend our condolences to her family during this difficult time.”

Football fans across West Nile have been mourning Mungubitimu’s tragic passing, expressing their heartfelt condolences on various social media platforms.

However, Isaac Oucha Ovona Mandir, the LC1 Chairman of Puvungu Jukaal Cell and Chief of Puvungu Chiefdom, called on fans to support their teams with sportsmanship, urging them to embrace match outcomes positively.

Currently, Pakwach Young Stars FC competes in the West Nile Regional League’s Nyagak Zone.
